The Impact of Maiastra: Perspective from the Principal Violist of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Wednesday, May 6, 2026

Exemplary feedback from a Maiastra alumnus and how the Maiastra model fosters confidence and professional readiness.

Maiastra alumnus, Clem Pickering, who took part in three courses between 2023 and 2024, has recently reflected on how valuable these experiences have been in his flourishing professional career as a musician. In particular, when preparing for a series of important chamber music concerts with limited rehearsal time. As principal viola of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) Clem was invited by Guy Johnston to participate in a series of chamber music concerts, a trip designed to support Johnston’s upcoming recordings of the Walton and Barber cello concertos with the BSO. In this fast-paced setting, Clem found himself meeting new musicians, rehearsing briefly, and then performing in important concerts soon after.

What made Clem’s preparation for these concerts so effective was the foundation and way of working through his projects with Maiastra. The model employed by Maiastra - bringing musicians together for short, intense rehearsal periods before performance - closely mirrors the demands of the professional music world.

“The Maiastra model really bridged the gap for me between conservatoire education and the profession. Your work with Maiastra has really had a hugely positive impact on my ability and confidence in preparing and participating in concerts such as this, so I wanted to reach out to you to once again share my sincere gratitude for all your support.”

Clem’s heartfelt gratitude towards Maiastra underscores the significance of opportunities that allow musicians to work under real-world conditions. The positive feedback he shares is a testament to how the Maiastra model fosters both skill and self-assurance, making it an exemplary pathway for aspiring professionals looking to excel in demanding musical environments.

Everyone at Maiastra is so proud of you, Clem, and we are following your flourishing career with great joy and delight!
